Welcome

I would like to welcome you to my virtual portfolio and thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to review it! Throughout this portfolio I would like to give you the chance to get to know me better as a person, and possibly a perspective employee. This portfolio allows me to give you a feel for who I am as a person in a much better fashion than any paper resume could do. This website includes my résumé along with many of my past assignments, as well as my extracurricular activities, my interests, and my hobbies. I hope that by reviewing this portfolio you are able to get a better understanding for who I am as an overall person and where I want to go throughout my life. Thank you again for visiting!

Letter of Intent

Dear Visitor,
I would like to start by thanking you for taking the time to visit my website. I designed this site for two reasons. First, I would like to demonstrate what I am capable of doing in the business and communication field to potential employers, as well as giving them a look at who I truly am as a person. By viewing this site I hope to portray to you what a dedicated worker I can be, as well as my academic and work experience.

I am currently a Junior at The College of New Jersey where I am majoring in Communication Studies with a minor in Business Management. I have been involved in this major and minor for over two years now and have learned to love what the classes have to offer. All of the classes here at TCNJ challenge you to think outside the box and learn new material everyday.

I am also a member of the TCNJ Varsity Baseball Team and because of this have learned the value of time management. My love for baseball has also pushed me into the coaching field where I would love to stay involved teaching children at some point in my life. I am an extremely hard worker at whatever I do and like I stated earlier hope to demonstrate that throughout this website.
Sincerely,
James Ruzich

Academic Experience and Written Samples

Throughout my time here at The College of New Jersey, and while attending Rutgers University, I have taken many classes that will help prepare me for a career in business and/or communication. To view some of these classes please click here.
Due to these classes I have numerous written assignments that I have posted for your viewing pleasure...

Writing for Business
During this class we had many assignments that would transfer over into the world of public relations and business management. These are some of the assignments from that class.

Business Letter
Business Memo
Press Release

Introduction to Media Studies
This is a introductory level communication studies course that allows the students to get to know different types of media. In this class I have learned how television and radio are so closely connected as well as the evolution of newspapers and the internet. This assignment dealt with newspapers as a media and the use of yellow journalism.

Boston Photograph Assignment

Languages of Film and Television
This course offered an in-depth look at television and motion pictures. We learned the history of televison and movies as well as how everything is made. This assignment was in place of our classes final and touches on topic that were key to our studies.

Television News Assignment

Strategies of Public Relations
I am currently in the process of taking this communication course. The course provides an overview of research-based strategies and tactics used in public relations practices to meet communication goals. It has a special emphasis on the effort to transform public relations from a crat into a complete, recognized professional practice. For this class there are two assignments:
Public Relations Plan
-Media Kit: each group must create a complete media kit based on the group's PR Plan, suitable for release either directly to the media or at a news conference.

Work Experience

Picture courtesy of Ralph Pacifico and the Little Big League Website

Since I was a freshman in high school I have worked for my old baseball coach Ralph Pacifico at The Montclair Kimberley Academy. These are the two camps that I have been fortunate enough to work over the past seven years.

Little Big League
This camp offers young children the opportunity to work on their baseball skills while still having a fun camp experience. During my early years there I was responsible for the equipment at the camp and would fill in where need be. Now as I have grown and my baseball career has continued I am in charge of my own group and have started to do some front office work with my coach. This past summer I was in charge of the third through sixth grade boys group during the day and would help with the paper work once the official camp day had ended.

STAR CAMP (Sports, Theater, Arts, Recreational)
STAR Camp offers children a once in a lifetime experience. The day set up like a school day, yet instead of schoolwork the day is filled with fun activities. I have always been involved with the sports aspect of the camp, however this past summer I was in charge of my own activity called Old School P.E.. I was also appointed as one of the Public Relations employees. I make sure that local schools and recreational centers have brochures and talk to staff about the opportunities that the camp offers.

Leadership Experience

New Jersey StoneCrabs

During the Summer of 2009 I was privileged enough to be a part of the New Jersey StoneCrabs summer baseball program as an Assistant Coach. This team is loosely affiliated with The Montclair Kimberley Academy High School, yet draws in players from around the Essex County area in New Jersey. I was mostly involved with working with our infielders and hitters, yet was extremely close with the entire team. We ended up going to the State Playoffs for the Connie Mack Summer Baseball League before being eliminated during the first weekend.

I learned a great deal during the few months that I was with this team. I worked along side the head coach Larry Canales not only with the coaching activities but also with the paper work aspect of the team. We had to make sure that we had all of our expenses taken care of based on the money that we received from the players on the team. Neither of us were payed for coaching, yet we got a great deal of experience in numerous aspects of not only the coaching world, but also the business aspect of sports as well.

Community Service

Saint Jude Bike-a-Thon

Dating back to my Freshman year of high school, I was involved with a bike-a-thon to fulfill community service hours for my Confirmation at Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Verona, NJ. I never thought that this would turn into having an active role in the events planning and functioning today.

Just Prior to entering college my mother, Lori Ruzich, took over as our Parish leader for hosting this event for the soon to be Confirmation Candidates. Ever since this day I have been involved in planning the event and making sure that all of the money is accounted for once the event is over, which goes directly to the Saint Jude Research Hospital. I am also at the event whenever possible to help the children throughout a wonderful, and inspirational day.

Baseball Career and Accolades

Since as long as I can remember I have always loved to play sports. Growing up I was involved with soccer, basketball, and baseball, yet as I grew older I realized that my love was in baseball. I played during my childhood for the Verona Barnstomers, a town travel team. I then continued to play in high school at the Montclair Kimberly Academy where I was a four year varsity starter at numerous positions. Upon graduation I attended Rutgers University (New Brunswick) where I played baseball for two years before transferring to The College of New Jersey in Ewing, New Jersey. Since arriving at TCNJ I have been a two year starter at first base and was a part of the 2009 New Jersey Athletic Conference championship team, and the 2010 runner-up team.

During my baseball career I have worked very hard at becoming the best player possible. It demonstrates how when I put my mind to something I can truly accomplish a great amount. These are some of the accolades I have received over the past few years (click here). These are also some previous articles.
